The Sixth International Conference on Computer Science and Information Technologies (CSIT-2007), an initiative of the Institute of Informatics and Automation Problems of the National Academy of Armenia, opened today in Yerevan. A number of well-known scientists from Great Britain, France, Japan, Russia, and Iran participated in the conference.

As Yuri Shoukouryan, the Vice President of National Academy mentioned, the purpose of the conference, which has been held every two years since 1997, is to encourage exchange of scientific and technological information between researchers in the field of Computer Science and Information Technologies. Ninety three scientific articles were presented during the conference, which was held from until September 24-28. In the framework of the conference a round table devoted to issues of computing modeling was held and EU-Armenian educational and research issues were discussed.

According to Armen Grigoryan, IT Development Support Council Secretary, it is not possible to be a leader in the sphere of information technologies without a scientific base and that’s why the organization of such kind of conferences in Armenia is very important. Science is dynamically developing and constantly changing and serves as a base for implementing new technologies in economy. It is a very expensive sphere and needs serious investments. The entrance of some leading companies in this sphere into the Armenian market proves that the country has big potential. He also noted that the next year’s state budget envisions 3% allotments to science.

According to Mr. Grigoryan, the competitiveness of Armenian scientists in the international sphere is due to their ability to be rapidly retrained and to be responsiveness to innovations. Nourbert Jousten, the manager of International Scientific and Technical center that has operated in Armenia since 1995, also participated at the conference. In Armenia 130 projects were financed through this center, with a total funding level of 30 million dollars.
